Time is running out - Why put it off?

Each year thousands of individuals put off filing their tax returns until the last day (I am sure that more than one person reading this has just said ‘that’s me!’)...miss the deadline and penalties may be incurred.

This begs the question, why put off filing a tax return and run the risk of incurring a late filing penalty, these start at £100! And begin to rise considerably. See my blog ‘A costly mistake’ for examples.

I guess it’s a job not many look forward to, and as we all know, jobs like that get put off and off until the last possible minute when they become a frantic rush to get sorted.

The funny thing is we don’t make these jobs any easier the longer we put them off, if anything they become more difficult as we haven’t left ourselves the time to consider all the options.

The even funnier thing is this doesn’t just apply to people who file their own returns, many who use an accountant still push this task to the last minute. Although they may not experience the stress of trying to file the return last minute they certainly leave themselves open to the stress of trying to pay a tax bill at the last minute.

Personally even when I put something off to the last minute there is always a nagging thought that it has to be done. The sooner those jobs are done the sooner that nagging thought is dismissed. Get those returns filed, WHY PUT IT OFF?!?!
